Mortlock's Cottage is currently under restoration and conversion from cramped convict barracks to first class tourism cottage.
Named in honour of ex-convict John Mortlock who served at nearby Impression Bay and Cascades and later instructed the Super-intendent's children at Saltwater River in 1849.
"There I resided alone, in a comfortable detached house, near the summit of a hill, commanding on all sides a remarkably fine prospect of romantic and lake-like scenery." (Experiences of a Convict by J.F. Mortlock)
It is unlikely that this cottage was the building that Mortlock lived in but as it has not been possible to substantiate which building it was and it may in fact no longer exist, we feel we should name the cottage after him to remind us of the people who once lived here.
